In celebration of World Refugee Day, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music (BKCM) is joining forces with Spaceworks and refugeere settlement agencies Catholic Charities of NY, CAMBA, Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), International RescueCommittee (IRC), and Refugee and Immigrant Fund (RIF), to host an evening of music, food, and community for their clients and NYC neighbors.

The June 10 event is FREE and open to the public, and any donations will benefit the BKCM New Overtures Fellowship, which aims to provide professional development for refugees, immigrants, and asylees seeking careers in music education in New York City.

Held throughout multiple floors of BKCM’s five-story building in Park Slope, the Festival will kick off at 6 pm with family fun: live kids’ music, an interactive Brazilian folk drumming demonstration, a Zumba dance-along, face-painting, crafts, and pizza.

Continuing at 8 pm, dozens of musicians from Syria, Ukraine, Nepal, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and all over the world—many of whom are revitalizing their musical lives after resettling here in the U.S.—will present an evening of live music. There will also be an experiential percussion room, a pop-up art gallery, and information booths with resources from resettlement agencies. Beer and wine will be provided, along with snacks from Emma’s Torch and HotBread Kitchen. Dinner will be pot-luck style, so guests are encouraged to bring a dish to share!

The Brooklyn Conservatory of Music’s mission is to transform lives, break down barriers, and build community through music. We are thrilled to join with six inspiring, impactful organizations to host an event that will do just that.
