Summary: The Volunteer Services Team is a part of the Agency Relations Department at Catholic Charities New York. Catholic Charities NY is the umbrella organization over a Federation of 90 separately incorporated agencies/non-profits, and Agency Relations provides services and support to these agencies in the form of volunteers, in-kind donations, grant money, governance support, legal advice, and more. The Federation of 90 agencies cover a wide range of human service organizations across Manhattan, Staten Island, the Bronx and the Lower Hudson Valley.

The Volunteer Services Intern will support the Manager of Volunteer Services to (1) manage the volunteer services program, and (2) work on special projects as needed.

The Intern is someone with exceptional time management skills and pays close attention to detail. The Intern enjoys working on multiple projects at the same time, and does not get overwhelmed with new requests and demands throughout any given day.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assist with all administrative tasks in the Volunteer Services department, including:
    • Coordinating and tracking new volunteer applications, including background checks,
    • Monitoring and tracking volunteer referrals to agencies,
    • Monitoring Volunteer Services and Junior Board email accounts,
    • Coordinating and distributing volunteer appreciation “swag” and supplies,
    • Filing reimbursements, and
    • Other administrative tasks.
  • Assist with updating the Volunteer Services website, including:
    • Monitoring, updating and maintaining volunteer postings, and
    • Providing support to volunteers and agencies for Salesforce, HandsOnConnect, and other software.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:

This is a part-time position, average of 21 hours per week – up to a maximum of 29 hours per week. Schedule will depend on Intern’s academic schedule.

  • Work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Team efforts to complete projects and/or coordinate successful events
  • Ability to move and transport documents, objects and other materials, including occasional setup and breakdown for events as needed
  • Ability to sort and package in-kind donations, holiday gifts, and other inventory in excess of 20 pounds
  • Occasional travel for events and meetings, using a vehicle or public transportation, traversing city streets, ascending/descending stairs, and exposure to outside weather conditions
  • Host orientations for new volunteers
  • Remain stationary at a work station and use a computer at least 80% of the time.


  • Complete 2 database projects
  • Design and implement one new element to the Volunteer Service Department Qualifications


  • High school diploma or equivalency required

Skills, Licenses, and/or competencies required:

  • Knowledge of MS Office Suite
  • Exceptional time management skills and attention to detail
  • Public speaking skills
  • Familiarity with CRM software, including Salesforce and HandsOnConnect, is a plus
