So what does it take to be a top volunteer?  Check out our new video about Sally Cahur, our Catholic Charities USA Volunteer of the Year Finalist to find out.

A retired journalist and PR pro, Sally, in her current uniform of glasses, blond bobbed hair and classic cardigan, uses the writing skills she honed throughout her career to help refugees we serve write standout resumes that land them jobs in their new homeland.

Those she helps, hailing from hotspots from around the globe – Syrians fleeing bombs, Somalis just released from refugee camps, Tibetans finally free to practice their religion –often feel overwhelmed, intimidated and inadequate.

Sally gives them a special gift: confidence.  Whether working with a sheep herder from Nepal or a professional engineer, Sally picks up on their relevant abilities and experiences and transforms them into transferable skills.

“I never had any experience in the U.S.,” says Binta Jallow, garbed in a bright yellow head scarf and red, blue and yellow kafkan from her native Africa. “So she said to focus on the experience I have in my country to write a resume and that really helped me find my first job.”

Over Sally’s more than 11 years of service with Catholic Charities she has written over 2,000 resumes and helped over 800 immigrants like Binta.  But the real magic is how she connects with clients, helping them recognize their strengths, affirm their experience and draw on their resilience to rebuild their lives.

“Sally’s one of those rare individuals who has been so selfless,” says Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Director Kelly Agnew-Barajas in this new video.  “We can’t do without her.”

Sally is one of the CCUSA the hundreds of amazing volunteers who dedicate their time and talents to Catholic Charities’ ministry each year. By applying their skills to serve and help others, they exemplify the mission and spirit of Catholic Charities.
