Help for Families Already Overwhelmed by Homelessness

Clean diaper or breakfast for baby?  Until this week, Moms already facing homelessness also face this horrible choice.  But now, thanks to a partnership Catholic Charities NY forged with NYC Councilmember Annabel Palma, we are filling the gap by offering a diaper bank with free diapers in the Soundview, Castle Hill and Parkchester Bronx communities she represents where a staggering 1 out of every 3 people live in poverty.

Since antipoverty programs don’t cover diapers,  impoverished families simply cannot afford the average $80 per month cost of this essential staple for their children’s health.

Clearly dirty diapers take an obvious toll on hygiene and health.  Without clean diapers children are prone to develop rashes, infections and more.

They also take a toll on babies and parents’ ability to pull themselves out of poverty

  • Without diapers babies cannot participate in most early childhood education programs
  • Without childcare parents cannot go to work

Equally important, our new diaper bank brings families into our Blackrock HomeBase program. Here they can take advantage of our employment counseling and other programs that promote independence.

Catholic Charities HomeBase offers neighborhood-based homelessness prevention centers located in high-need neighborhoods that help families avoid homelessness.  Services include employment assistance, advocacy, financial assistance – whatever a family needs to stabilize their current crisis, build skills to maintain housing stability and avoid falling into the shelter system.

In partnership with NYC Council member Annabel Palma, Catholic Charities now offers 10-day supplies of disposable diapers for eligible families with children three years old and younger in the District 9 Bronx neighborhoods.  And this, we hope, is just the beginning.

Are you or someone you know forced to choose between diapers and food?

Catholic Charities is responding to the needs of our neighbors during the
COVID-19 pandemic.
