Thanks to our special “Stuff the Bus” kick off this past weekend when we talk about food drives we really mean it.  Buses stuffed with food donations for the hungry teamed with Catholic Charities, iHeart Media and more to drive donated food from five mid-Hudson Stop & Shops into Catholic Charities for distribution at our local food pantries.  Nearly 55,000 food items have been collected through Stuff the Bus since Catholic Charities was named the beneficiary in June 2015.

Catholic Charities supports a vast network of soup kitchens and food pantries to help hungry families and individuals in New York.

Volunteers teamed up on June 24th and 25th to collect donations at Stop & Shop locations in Newburgh, Hyde Park, Hopewell Junction, and Poughkeepsie. Meanwhile, iHeartMedia morning personalities Joe Daily and Michelle Taylor of Q92, WRWD’s Party Marty Mitchell, and Tom Sipos of WKIP also went live on air with Catholic Charities staff to discuss hunger, poverty and the key roll the Stuff the Bus food drive takes on particularly during now when need is high and food donations are low.

“Summer is not a time when we typically think of food drives but it’s a time when the need skyrockets for food pantries,” said iHeartMedia Market President Chuck Benfer. “That’s because children who typically receive free or reduced breakfast or lunch during the school year are now home for summer break and families have additional mouths to feed.”

Gallagher Bus Service Corporation/Leprechaun Lines in New Windsor donated not only the school buses used for the food drive but also the bus drivers’ time and services for the two-day food drive. Additional event supporters included Claudio Cares Foundation, Foam & Wash Car Wash, People’s United Bank, the James Brown Family Foundation, and Viking Industries.

“Unfortunately, (summer) is also a time when food pantry supplies are often at their lowest,” Mr. Benfer added. “Our Summer Stuff the Bus food drive helps restock pantry shelves to meet the heightened summer demand.”
