St. Nicholas Shopping Day Kicks off the Christmas Season

Folks decked out in green Catholic Charities t-shirts, some wearing red Santa hats, and all armed with Christmas wish lists drafted by those we serve, dashed down the aisles of Kmart located in NYC's Astor Place last Saturday, December 10. They packed shopping carts with coats, sweaters, blankets and more as part of our Junior Board's St. Nicholas Project.

"This is St. Nicholas Shopping Day, the culmination of all the fundraising efforts of Catholic Charities Junior Board for the entire year,” says Junior Board Chair Brian Allen in this uplifting Shopping Day video.

The Catholic Charities Junior Board cultivates the next generation of leaders by introducing young professionals to Catholic Charities through volunteer opportunities, social gatherings, faith-based events and philanthropic support.

The best part, most Junior Board members agree, is St. Nicholas Shopping Day.  They team with Catholic Charities to invite family, friends, you, me, and anyone who wants to pitch in as elves- for the day with funds from our generous donors.

“Everyone is running around and has a role and it’s nonstop,” says Junior Board member Joey Camerata. “We shop for over 3,000 individuals and you can just imagine how it's going to brighten up their day and their lives.

Our St. Nicholas Shopping Day is the highlight of a year-round initiative to help the most vulnerable families of all religions in New York City and neighboring communities.

Last week, we shopped for people in need in Westchester County.

“It’s a way to remember what's actually important about this season,” says fellow Junior Board member Jennifer Monroy.

As Cardinal Timothy Dolan grabs the store microphone and instead of the usual “Attention K-mart Shoppers” announcement, he shares the day’s joy.

“Thank you,” Cardinal Dolan says, his words ringing throughout the store.  “Thanks to Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New York and a blessed Advent and Christmas to all.”
