See How Catholic Charities Battles Back

As homelessness spikes to its highest levels since the 1930s Great Depression, Catholic Charities NY is recognized for our success battling back. Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and Bronx Clergy Tax Force CEO Bishop Angelo Rosario gave their “Above & Beyond Recognition” award to Catholic Charities Outreach Coordinator Daphne Aponte at their interfaith Unity and Peace Breakfast held at Coop City on April 12th.  They also recognized Catholic Charities Bronx Regional Coordinator Fr. Eric Cruz as they gave a Citation of Merit to Catholic Charities Homebase (Preserving Housing) program where Ms. Aponte works.

Why?  Catholic Charities success preventing evictions speaks for itself:

  • 11,927 families prevented from becoming homeless
  • 6,292 families living in affordable housing
  • 12,194 individuals provided with emergency overnight shelter

“Here’s to my amazing team at Catholic Charities, to Fr. Cruz who tells us we’re going to serve whoever comes to us,” Ms. Aponte said as she received the award. “You keep the standard and the bar high and make us even better because of it.”

Skyrocketing housing prices coupled with low wages result in evictions and homelessness for growing numbers of children, individuals and families.

Catholic Charities is here to help.  Our Preserving Housing program provides homelessness prevention services for families and individuals facing imminent eviction.  Our staff assesses the situation.  They work with individuals and families to create comprehensive plans that respond to the immanent emergency.  And they help avoid future crises.  To access rent subsidies and other government programs our caseworkers work with landlords, legal services, fellow community-based organizations and financial management programs.

“You’re the triage,” Fr. Cruz said to Ms. Aponte and cheering staff. “You’re the first smiling face people in need see and that first welcome is so important to begin changing people’s lives.”
