Focus on Righteousness  Vs. Self Righteousness

Catholic Charities Executive Director Msgr. Kevin Sullivan used his invocation before the New York State Assembly this week to offer counsel during these combative times as together Catholic Charities leaders from across New York State advocated with a collective voice for those we serve and marked the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Catholic Charities by the New York State Legislature.

“Father, never let our unquestionable thirst for righteousness turn into the drunkenness of self-righteousness,” Msgr. Sullivan prayed with the legislators.  “Let our own voice for good not be so loud that we fail to hear the voice of another who just might be speaking your wisdom that we need to hear.”

His prayers summed up priorities voiced by representatives from the Catholic Charities of the dioceses of New York, Albany, Brooklyn & Queens, Buffalo, Ogdensburg, Rockville Centre, Rochester and Syracuse during the two-day, February 6-7 2017, Albany Advocacy event and plans going forward as Catholic Charities celebrates its 100-year anniversary since formal incorporation. Our 100-year experience in helping poor and vulnerable New Yorkers, non-Catholics and Catholics alike, informs the new Catholic Charities Centennial Public Policy Agenda shared with legislators this week.

Catholic Charities Centennial Public Policy Agenda highlights include:

  • Preserving and developing affordable housing and addressing homelessness
  • Bolstering agencies to help New Yorkers in need
  • Supporting and advocating for families and children in times of crisis
  • Helping youth to succeed
  • Feeding our hungry neighbors
  • Welcoming new Americans:  integrating immigrants and refugees

Together, these initiatives unite us as we launch Catholic Charities into the next century of help and hope.  They are an extension of the invocation Msgr. Sullivan prayed with state legislators:

“Father,” Msgr. Sullivan prayed, “help us to remember in this great state of New York its very constitution provides for the needs of the poor and vulnerable among us.”
