Meet Them Now

It was tough enough for Jasmine and her sons, Timothy and Travis to be legally blind.  Now they and little baby Lillian faced homelessness.  Check out their story of hope and renewal in this, the final installment of our special five-part series mapping Catholic Charities in your neighborhood.

Jasmine & Her Children

Jasmine was born with a genetic eye disorder. Her eyesight deteriorated until, in her early twenties, she became legally blind — and utterly dependent on her husband.

Then, her two sons were diagnosed with the same disorder. The stress on Jasmine’s marriage became too great, and the result was divorce.

“I felt completely lost,” she says. “I felt like, how am I going to do this with two little boys? They can’t see; I can’t see. How am I going to provide for them?”

Families confronted by a crisis often feel helpless. Catholic Charities provides accurate and timely information and referrals, and will advocate for needed services. Through counseling and financial assistance, Catholic Charities’ crisis experts help individuals and families plan long-term solutions to immediate problems.

Jasmine and her 11-year-old son, Timothy, had successful operations to preserve what remained of their sight. But in the midst of recovery, another disaster struck: The city program that helped them pay rent was canceled.

“I was back and forth in housing court and the landlord,” she says. “He wanted me out, and everything I had got tossed outside.”

That’s when Catholic Charities stepped in — with housing, furniture and legal and financial counseling. Jasmine and her boys had more than a new home; they had new hope.

“I don’t know where I would be if it wasn’t for Catholic Charities,” Jasmine says.

These aren’t just stories. These are our neighbors.
