Catholic Charities Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Center on Thanksgiving 2017

A young mom balancing a baby on one hip, turkey and trimmings she was just given on the other.  An elderly man leaning on a shopping cart filled with his cane along with donated groceries to keep his balance. Toddlers dressed in thin jackets on this 45- degree day playing around them. These are a few of the folks whose Thanksgivings were made thanks to Catholic Charities NY’s turkey-and-all-the-trimmings give away held yesterday, November 20th, at our Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Community Center in Harlem.

Catholic Charities staff unloading turkeys from delivery trucks

Staff formed lines to unload trucks filled with turkeys, onions, potatoes, carrots, stuffing and more.  Inside the community center’s auditorium had been transformed into a holiday bizarre.  Folding tables overflowed with free groceries for more than 800 families in need twe serve.

The mom, the elderly man, the children and more strolled from table to table, filling shopping bags with food for their families.

Holiday cheer and handshakes dominated the day.  Former NY Mets and baseball legend Rusty Staub and retired Key Food owner Mark D’Urso, whose generosity helped us host our Thanksgiving give away, greeted participants.

They were joined by Congressman Adriano Espaillat, Assemblywoman Inez E. Dickens, Catholic Charities Executive Director Msgr. Kevin Sullivan, student volunteers from a local high school and smiling staff whose holiday, many said, was made by this special event. The event marked just one – but this writer’s personal favorite – of free Thanksgiving meals and grocery giveaways Catholic Charities sponsors for those we serve throughout New York.
