Catholic Charities Hosts Family Carnival Days for Those in Need

What an amazing street fair -- everything from ice cream to rides to housing advice was free!  As a coed from Elon University in North Carolina and a summer intern with Catholic Charities NY, I never before experienced anything like it.

On the sunny Friday of July 20th,  Catholic Charities Homebase eviction prevention program closed down  Randall Avenue in the Bronx to host its Back to School Carnival Day.  Children there, however, seemed to be thinking about anything but school.  Instead, they squealed on Ferris wheel rides, gorged themselves on hotdogs, danced as live bands serenaded the crowd.

A little boy ask me “Miss, is the ice cream really free for everyone?” I answered, “Yes, everything is free, even the ice cream,” and he ran off to the ice cream truck ahead with a huge smile on his face.

While the fun, free event attracted the crowds, the street fare served a bigger goal, said Catholic Charities HomeBase Director Navin Singh, the brains and brawn behind the event.  Neighbors in this struggling community learn about Catholic Charities multitude of services including eviction prevention programs, food pantries, free diapers and more.  And children in need receive clothes and backpacks filled with school supplies to prepare them for the coming school year.

Several special guests also attended including Catholic Charities of New York Executive Director Monsignor Kevin Sullivan, New York City Police Commissioner James O’Neill and Bronx Borough President Ruben Díaz.

Ruben Díaz gave thanks to Catholic Charities for all of their hard work creating such a successful occasion. As well, Ruben Díaz showed his support by providing funding for the 2,000 free backpacks that were given to the children for their upcoming school year.

I felt lucky to attend this fair and experience the pure joy that comes from giving back to a community. Catholic Charities Homebase truly embodies a sense of dedication to their work and helps to create better livelihoods for every person that walks through their doors. This carnival gave hundreds of families the perfect opportunity to have fun and let go of the troubles within their lives.
