The Doorbell Is Ringing

NSACares Staff Volunteered at Our Local Food Hub

This is no Halloween trick or treat.  Instead, hungry New Yorkers’ hopes for a solid meal are becoming reality, most recently thanks to the National Supermarket Association’s teamwork last week with Catholic Charities at our new South Bronx food hub.  That’s when nearly 50 members of the National Supermarket Association and their families volunteered to roll up their sleeves and prepare bags of non-perishable food for distribution at our food pantries.

We’ve teamed up with the National Supermarket Association before – most recently when the association promoted improved perfect attendance and academic improvements for disadvantaged children we serve by donating more than 1,000 toys as rewards.

Their support is part of NSACares, the National Supermarket Association’s initiative to partner with charitable organization and give back to the community.

Our recent teamwork, meanwhile, is thanks to Catholic Charities’ innovative 1,050 square-foot food distribution center located in the low-income community of the South Bronx.

Here we take hunger head on, multiplying food-option availability while empowering those served.  With capacity to receive, sort and distribute 100,000 pounds of food each month – that’s 80,000 meals – our hub makes “just-in-time” deliveries to nearly two dozen secular and religious partner programs of all faiths in the Bronx and upper Manhattan. This allows these smaller food programs with limited refrigeration/storage to maximize grocery options while avoiding spoilage.

Meanwhile, our onsite Client Choice Food Pantry provides enhanced healthy food options during expanded daytime and evening hours to serve growing numbers of working poor.  The hub also serves as a central warehouse that recruits volunteers while providing social services designed to promote independence.

Catholic Charities supports a vast network of soup kitchens and food pantries in NYC and state.

So as you answer your doorbell and dole out treats to the little princesses and goblins that wait, please know that Catholic Charities wishes all New York children a happy and safe Halloween.  Meanwhile, before, during and after Halloween and every holiday, day in and day out, we team with NSACares and donors like you to fill our food pantries with healthy food for New Yorkers in need.

The doorbell is ringing and hungry children are waiting.

During Halloween and every day, please help us feed hungry New Yorkers
