Integrity, Humility, Charity – More Than Just a Motto for this Restructuring Community

Leaders from New York’s corporate restructuring community belonging to the special group, Catholic Renewal,, raised nearly $1.2 million  to support the work of Catholic Charities at their annual cocktail reception on Monday, September 25, 2017.  One of the missions of Catholic Renewal, in affiliation with Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York, is to raise funds to provide food for those in need, regardless of creed. In light of Puerto Rico's particular need this year following Hurricane Irma and Maria's one-two punches to this U.S. territory, the leadership agreed to earmark more than $100,000 in proceeds from the evenings auction to provide aide there.

The reception, held at the historic New York Athletic Club on Central Park South, honored key leaders in New York’s restructuring community including Patrick J. Nash, Jr. and Judge Arthur J. Gonzalez (Ret.) who received St. Francis Service Award awards.

The Catholic Renewal St. Francis Service Award is given each year to members of the corporate restructuring community who, regardless of creed, demonstrated a standard of selfless integrity, humility and charity that warrants the recognition and acclaim of his or her peers. The award is in the name of St. Francis of Assisi, a Catholic saint who devoted his life to service to those in need. Pope Francis took his name in honor of St. Francis, and has lived a life devoted to the poor, the hungry, and the downtrodden. Since becoming Pope, he has endeavored to strengthen the Church’s devotion to these ideals in a broad spirit of inclusion.

This year’s St. Francis Service Award winner Patrick Nash is a partner in the Restructuring Group of Kirkland & Ellis LLP. He represents a variety of clients in complex business reorganizations, troubled company M&A, debt restructurings, and financing matters.

Described as “very commercial, very smart and very practical,” Mr. Nash has been listed as a leading lawyer by Chambers USA every year since 2013. Most recently, Chambers noted him as “highly respected for his expertise in the representation of high-profile companies involved in complex reorganizations and debt restructurings.”  He has also been described by sources as “well-rounded and good at everything” and “wonderful to deal with, very smart and very capable.”

Fellow St. Francis Service Award Winner Judge Arthur J. Gonzalez is a senior fellow at the New York University Law School and the former Chief Judge of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, a position in which he served from 2010-2012.  During his 16-year tenure on the bench, Judge Gonzalez presided over three of the more significant and high profile bankruptcy cases in recent memory, Enron, WorldCom and Chrysler.  With a reputation for considered thought applied with measure to era-defining issues, in 2016 Judge Gonzalez was appointed by President Obama to the Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico established under the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA).

Born in Brooklyn, Judge Gonzalez’s path has been grounded in commitment to public service and community.  He spent the first 13 years of his career as a teacher in the New York City Public Schools, eventually attending Fordham Law School in the evenings while working full-time.  As an attorney in the Office of Chief Counsel of the Internal Revenue Service, he earned the Chief Counsel’s Special Achievement Award for three consecutive years.  In private practice for several years thereafter, he was appointed Assistant United States Trustee in the Southern District of New York in 1991 and United States Trustee for Region 2 (Second Circuit) in 1993, serving in that position until his appointment to the bench.

Integrity. Humility. Charity.  That’s the motto of Catholic Renewal.  And that is what they accomplished at this tremendous annual cocktail reception event.
