Catholic Charities Keeps the Lights on After School

Children at a Catholic Charities afterschool program feasted last week on healthy snacks and stocked up on free homework-helper giveaways at “Lights on Afterschool.”  This annual event held November 22 celebrates the key role after-school programs play in the lives of children in need.

Of course, the kids in the Catholic Charities Alianza division La Plaza Beacon program already know this.

Joseph Trinidad, for example, a teen who arrived just last year from the Dominican Republic, credits the afterschool program for getting him on his school’s honor roll.  He takes part in Alianza’s robotics program and explores options for alternative energy.  Other children get help in reading, math and the arts.

Too many children return from school to empty apartments and the lure of the streets. At Catholic Charities we offer an alternative: safe, high-quality programs staffed by motivated professionals and volunteers.
