Catholic Charities Confronts Alcohol & Drug Abuse Epidemic

Confronting horrendous stats – more than one-third of young adults ages 18-25 are binge alcohol drinkers and nearly 1 in 10 abuse drugs! -- Catholic Charities Community Services of Orange and Sullivan County joined key federal, state and local leaders on August 31, 2016 to kick off National Recovery Month and spread the word about free mental health services in New York.

Why? Because, simply put

  • Behavioral health is essential to overall health
  • Prevention works
  • Treatment is effective
  • People can recover

“Together we can make a difference in the lives of those suffering from the disease of addiction,” said Assemblywoman Aileen Gunter, Chair of New York State Assembly’s Committee on Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities.

Assemblywoman Gunter and fellow speakers confronted the

  • Epidemic of heroin and prescription opioid addiction
  • Growing issue of mental and substance abuse disorders
  • Critical of role prevention, treatment and support services

But talk is cheap. So these speakers are taking action. Together they are promoting legislation, implementing preventive measures, helping loved ones recognize signs of a problem and guiding those in need to appropriate treatment and recovery support services.

Our Recovery Center headquartered in Sullivan County run by Catholic Charities Community Services of Orange and Sullivan County, for example, offers a comprehensive continuum of services, including  prevention, intervention, and treatment for:

  • adolescents and adults with substance abuse
  • gambling disorders on an outpatient and inpatient basis
  • a day rehabilitation program.

We also run eight outpatient clinics in Orange County along with day rehabilitation services and medically supervised detox services on and off-site for adolescents.

“I came to the decision that if I wasn’t going to die, then I was set on finding a way to live,” said Lisa who is now in recovery.

Catholic Charities provides alcohol and substance abuse treatment and support for those seeking recovery and for the families who love them.

We understand that addiction is complex and has devastating impacts on communities.  Catholic Charities programs are designed to help individuals and their families through the recovery process.  Our programs range from outpatient clinics and support groups to inpatient recovery programs.
