Insider's Guide to This Historic Event

What an amazing night at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner in Manhattan as the presidential candidates tossed zingers and our own Cardinal Dolan, seated between them, attempted to mediate détente!

This presidential campaign ritual, now in its 71st year, offers candidates a chance to poke fun and movers and shakers a chance to see and be seen.

But most important, as Cardinal Dolan said last night, it raises funds for Catholic charities throughout New York.

That's "charities" with a small "c." Not only charities we and our 90 affiliated agencies represent but charity for a variety of causes.

"I'm talking about the thousands of women and children in our city we cherish as our earthly home who will benefit from the proceeds of this event," clarified Cardinal Dolan. "I'm talking about the African American mom from the Bronx eager to get a scholarship for her child into a renowned inner-city Catholic schools. I'm talking about the Mexican immigrant mom approaching our Catholic Charities for help uniting her family and obtaining citizenship , English language instruction and job training."

While the evening was filled with laughs and jabs, the generous $6 million dollars it netted was not enough to give a knockout punch to poverty in New York. That's why Catholic Charities is here, day in and day out, helping the immigrant mom, the worker struggling with blindness and the child in need.

And that is why Catholic Charities is grateful for your support.

As Cardinal Dolan said last night, "it is an honor to conclude this joyfuland historic evening with a word of gratitude to all of you."

Through the generosity of individuals, corporations, foundations, and many others, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York has met basic human needs, particularly of the poor and vulnerable among us, Catholic and non-Catholic alike, always with dignity and compassion. Your gift helps us continue our critical work.
