Catholic Charities Intervenes

Finding your way in a strange New York City neighborhood can be frightening.  Finding your way in a strange neighborhood while not knowing English can be tougher still.  Finding your way in a strange neighborhood while not knowing English as an immigrant unfamiliar with New York City ways can be even more scary.

So, imagine finding your way in a strange New York City neighborhood as an immigrant speaking no English while blind! Terrifying.

Catholic Charities Serves Immigrants & Refugees with Visual Impairments

Fortunately, Catholic Guild for the Blind offers special, free services for immigrants and refugees who are blind or visually impaired. These services are open to all immigrants, documented and undocumented, refugees, including individuals who are not eligible for state or federally funded programs due to their immigration status.

Often, when a visually impaired person arrives in the United States, they face challenges acclimating to their new environment due to difficulty communicating, navigating an unfamiliar environment and traveling to destinations independently. In addition, they may not know that services are available to them and may benefit from guidance and links to social services.

To help with this transition, Catholic Guild for the Blind’s free services include:

  • Classes in English for Speakers of Other Languages

These classes include specialized instructional materials for individuals with vision loss.

  • Orientation and Mobility Instruction

These classes teach white can skills for identification, traveling in unfamiliar environments, movement in home surroundings, street crossings and using public transportation.

  • Social Casework Services

This provides links to community resources including Catholic Charities Immigration and Refugee services, food pantry services, soup kitchens and resources specifically for the disabled.

Catholic Guild for the Blind Staff is

  • Certified in their chosen fields and leaders in their professions
  • Multilingual with access to translators in over 50 different languages
