Best Way to Help Feed Our Hungry Neighbors

ShopRite Teams with Catholic Charities to Make It Easy

Wonder what those “Feeding Our Neighbors” plastic buckets we’re seeing popping up at ShopRite supermarket registers are all about?

Thankfully, ShopRite, through its partnership Catholic Charities Feeding Our Neighbors campaign, makes helping the hungry as easy as dropping a dollar in one of those buckets when you push your shopping cart through the checkout line.

We New Yorkers face the same winter heartbreak when we see someone shivering and hungry; when we think about the nearly one million New York children who go to bed hungry; and when we wonder how to make a difference for more than just one meal.

Our Feeding Our Neighbors campaign has the answer.  Catholic Charities and ShopRite are joining forces once again to ensure that hungry New Yorkers in the Hudson Valley have enough to eat at this time of year when need remains high but giving does not.  By shopping at 27 ShopRite stores in Westchester and the Hudson Valley we can make cash or food donations that help replenish local food pantries’ dwindling supplies

Today – and for the fourth year in a row – Catholic Charities Executive Director Msgr. Kevin Sullivan and ShopRite VP of Operations Tom Urtz shook on it at ShopRite’s Greenway Plaza supermarket in Yonkers.

And while our formal campaign officially starts this Sunday, January 21, and runs through the following Sunday, February 3, donation buckets are already out at most participating ShopRite stores.

Feeding Our Neighbors is an archdiocesan-wide effort to raise food and funds to replenish food pantries and soup kitchens that feed hungry neighbors during the most critical time of the year.

Last year, Feeding Our Neighbors raised the equivalent of more than 1.5 million meals, supported in large part by $92,000 in cash donations and nearly 23,000 pounds of food collected at ShopRite locations throughout the Hudson Valley.

Catholic Charities, in partnership with ShopRite, aims to surpass those results in 2018 to feed the hungry across New York.

In addition, Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Eat Smart New York Hudson Valley will lend support to Feeding Our Neighbors via Nourish Your Neighbor, an educational initiative designed to encourage healthier food donations to food pantries.

Through it, shoppers will be provided with food donation bags and healthy shopping lists to provide donors with assistance in selecting nutritious options while they shop. Eat Smart New York will also put together pre-packaged shopping bags of healthy foods that ShopRite customers can purchase to support Feeding Our Neighbors, taking the guess work out of giving.

Between the last Sunday of January and first Sunday of February, Timothy Cardinal Dolan calls on non-Catholics and Catholics alike to feed our neighbors by replenishing food pantries and soup kitchens that so many families rely on to survive.
