Check Out the South Bronx Culture Trail Festival 2018

Looking for a fun way to celebrate this weekend with your family?  Always wanted to check out the Bronx?

Join Catholic Charities NY and our affiliate,  Casita Maria Center For Arts & Education, along with Bronx Music Heritage Center at the South Bronx Culture Trail Festival 2018: Somos Unidos. Uniting communities, arts, culture, and wellness, multiple events will be held throughout the South Bronx starting today, Thursday, May 31, last through the weekend and extend all the way through June 23rd

This family-friendly festival celebrates the rich cultural contributions of the communities that make the South Bronx their home.

Events showcase traditional roots and fusion art forms including music, dance, visual art, crafts, puppetry, theater and culinary arts that reflect the artistic ecosystem of the Bronx.

The South Bronx Culture Trail Festival is a community arts and education initiative established in 2011 by Casita Maria Center for Arts & Education and Dancing in the Streets.  It celebrates and captures key moments in the cultural life of the South Bronx.

Each year a cohort of partners including Catholic Charities NY are invited to contribute to this ever evolving and robust history to visualize a Trail through the neighborhoods of the South Bronx.  In addition to a cultural celebration, the South Bronx Culture Trail Festival serves as an economic engine for the community by hiring of local artists and promoting local businesses and tourism to the borough.

“The Bronx has an incredible legacy of art and music for its residents to be proud offend which we want to show off to everyone else,” says Elena Martinez, Folklorist & Co-Artistic Director, Bronx Music Heritage Center.  “The South Bronx Culture Trail and all the participating organizations prove that the Bronx is indeed, RISING!”

Casita Maria, the first charitable organization to serve the Hispanic Community in New York City, was incorporated in 1936 to give recently arrived Hispanic families the support they needed to thrive in their new homeland. Over time, Casita Maria expanded its programs to include homeless services, drug rehabilitation, violence prevention, gang intervention and teen pregnancy prevention.

Its Bronx-based programs focus on arts and education. These include in-school and after-school programs, summer camps and internships that serve more than 1,400 neighborhood youth.

Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education recently launched a new library and reading program for children in need. The program, created with the help of Catholic Charities volunteers, enriches Casita’s services in the South Bronx while engaging local teenagers in volunteerism. Casita Maria Community Support also provides services for homebound seniors in East Harlem.
