Temperatures soared into the 90s this week and feel like 100 on steaming city streets. This extreme heat is not just uncomfortable.  It’s downright dangerous.

Here are our top 10 tips to keep you, your family and your neighbors safe:

1. Stay out of the sun

2. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing

3. Drink extra fluids: Water is the safest liquid to drink during heat emergencies. Avoid beverages containing alcohol and/or caffeine

4. Eat small, frequent meals

5. Avoid strenuous activity, especially during the sun’s peak hours: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

6. Seek out air-conditioned buildings like movie theatres and malls.

7. Cool down with a cool bath, shower or swim at a pool or beach.

8. Cover all exposed skin with an SPF sunscreen (15 or above) and wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face and head.

9. Never leave your children or pets in the car.

10 .Check on elderly or disabled neighbors and others particularly vulnerable to the heat.
