Classification: Administrative Support Worker 

Department: Alianza Division Office: La Plaza Beacon Community Center 

Reports to: Group Leader 

Supervisory Responsibilities: No X 

Summary: The Tutor is responsible for helping participants complete homework, and provide academic support and guidance. The Tutor will assist the Activity Specialist when required, and conduct recreational activities in the absence of the Activity Specialist. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 

  1. Arrive on time, ready to work, and report to the Assistant Program Director or Group Leader. 
  2. Take daily attendance. 
  3. Collect report cards and keep track of the participants’ academic progress. 
  4. Attend weekly meetings given by the After School Coordinator and Group Leader. 
  5. Complete monthly individual progress forms and submit in a timely manner. 
  6. Assist with homework completion and provide academic support and guidance. 
  7. Work with the DOE teacher in the classroom. 
  8. Attend monthly parent meetings and Agency/Program special events. 
  9. Implement dance, drama, music and computer activities. 
  10. Inform participant’s guardian of absenteeism, meetings, or changes in behavior. 
  11. Ensure the cleanliness and presentation of all Beacon permanent space. 

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: 

Days and hours are generally Monday to Friday 2:30pm-6pm. Additional evening and weekend hours may be required to attend special events or meet program deadlines.

The demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

  • Ability and patience to work with children and young people, recognizing their exuberance and juvenile behavior, particularly in group settings. 
  • Remain in a stationary position either working at a computer or monitoring activities. 
  • Move for long periods, providing instruction. 
  • Travel when taking field trips, using public transportation, traverse city streets, ascend/descend stairs, and be exposed to outside weather conditions, while escorting youth. 


Education and/or experience required: 

  • High School Diploma or GED, working towards AA or BA degree, a plus. 
  • Must be at least 18 years old. 
  • Two years’ experience working with youth performing youth worker duties. 
  • Experience facilitating workshops. 
  • Experience providing one-on-one peer mediation. 

Skills, Licenses, and/or competencies required: 

  • Bilingual, English/Spanish. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with teams. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with families who face exceptional challenges. 
  • Excellent social skills demonstrative of empathy and support. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
